A member of Western Writers of America, Bill Markley's fourth book in the nonfiction Legendary West series, Wild Bill Hickok and Buffalo Bill Cody: Plainsmen (2022) received a gold Will Rogers Medallion in biography. Geronimo and Sitting Bull: Leaders (2021) received a silver Will Rogers Medallion in biography. Billy the Kid and Jesse James: Outlaws (2019) and Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson: Lawmen (2019) were 2020 nonfiction Will Rogers Medallion finalists. Bill and coauthor Kellen Cutsforth’s Old West Showdown (2018) was a 2019 Will Rogers Medallion nonfiction finalist. Its sequel is Standoff at High Noon (2021). Western Fictioneers selected Bill's Deadwood Dead Men (2013), as a finalist for 2014 Best First Western Novel. Bill has written three additional books and writes for True West, and Wild West magazines and is a staff writer for WWA’s Roundup Magazine
